Found cotton table-cloth with digitalized signatures in cotton thread.
This embroidered cloth was made with a grass roots football team FC Utd of Manchester. The team evolved following the take over of Manchester Utd by the American multi-millionaire Glazer family several years ago. FC Utd aims to take football back to its roots seeing its supporters as part of a big family. In exploring collective signatures, references are made to the petition, and also what is a “community” today. The cloth, (a found table-cloth) is made up of the digitalised signatures of the players taken from a team sheet in April 2012. In drawing attention to the ordinary players autographs, the work also juxtaposes the value of an autograph, and like some of my other signature cloths questions worth in this age of celebratory endorsement.
Her research is focused on devising and co-ordinating collaborative projects using embroidery and quilt making processes. Since 2010 she has instigated a series of “signature” projects, working with diverse groups around the world ranging from local community groups in Rochdale, Lancashire, to craft workers in Gujarat to refugee school children in in Lincoln, Nebraska. Each explores identity and belonging and notions of communities of practice.
Lynn trained in Textiles at Goldsmiths College, University of London and is a Senior Lecturer at the Manchester School of Art. She became a Public Engagement Fellow in 2009 and received a Knowledge Exchange Award from Manchester Metropolitan University in 2013. Lynn is a member of the 62 Group of Textile Artists, The Textile Society of the UK and an Associate Fellow of the International Quilt Study Center at the University of Nebraska.
She is working on a practice-based PhD at the University for the Creative Arts (Farnham) investigating the role of embroidery in socially engaged art from a maker’s perspective.

Applique sewn by hand made from khadi cotton.
This series of bags were a collaboration with textile makers in Ahmedabad India. In this project I asked the participants to ‘decorate’ the bags with their names using the applique technique they specialize in. In making this statement, the “value” of craftsmanship and individuals in the third world is questioned, in sharp contrast to the marketing tool deployed in Western consumerism today where branding from ‘signature’ perfume by the Beckham’s to Jamie Oliver’s ‘signature’ dishes for Sainsbury’s help increase sales.

Please Sign Here is a hand-sewn quilt made up of 336 pieces of cloth embroidered with the signatures of the citizens of Rochdale borough in 2013. It depicts a positive side to Rochdale people following the recent grooming scandal. The age range spans teenagers to people in their eighties and there are eighteen nationalities represented including England, Iran, Ireland, Malaysia, Poland, Algeria, Palestine, Bangladesh and Pakistan.
Woh Cares? 2012 94 x 70cm
Hand and machine sewn signatures with hand quilting on cotton fabric.
This small quilt was a collaboration with artisans in Ahmedabad Gujarat. Each artesan sewed their signature on the cloth to spell Who Cares (about craft). When the cloth arrived with me, it was in an unfinished state so I added wadding and backing and quilted the surface to make a small quilt. This cloth was made possible with the help of Lokesh Ghai who liaised with the makers.
