The title ‘From the Shadow’ is taken from a line from Auden’s As I Walked Out One Evening.  ‘Time watches from the shadow’ suggests a menacing, relentless, and ultimately conventional, portrayal of time as linear and uniform. In From the Shadow Ten Obstructions investigate the notions of time, shadow and their coming together.  Jane Fairhurst explores  war, famine, disease and climate change. Ian Vines plays with light, objects, images, shadows and reflections. Sarah Feinmann investigates  the relationships of time, light ,shadow and architectural form. Tina Finch introduces ideas of memory, connection  and the experience of the kiss. Sabrina Fuller proposes time as existing  between memory and anticipation, while Christopher Rainham’considers  the idea and reality, between the motion and the act. Claire Hignett examines the rhythm of the threaded dance, while Paddy O’Donnell accentuates the positive.

This exhibition features the work of Ten Obstructions, a group of diverse, creative practitioners, brought together by Castlefield Gallery, Manchester in 2019, as part of a visual art talent development programme for artists over 50. For the last five years they have been supporting each other’s practices and organising exhibitions. A key element of their approach is to respond to a place, theme, museum, or gallery collection, making their own individual work, creating common themes, and building cohesive exhibitions.

Ten Obstructions are: Jane Fairhurst, Sarah Feinmann, Tina Finch, Sabrina Fuller, Claire Hignett  Paddy O’Donnell, Christopher Rainham and Ian Vines
