We Coulda Had Blue Skies
07/08 – 30/08
What does the future hold? We Coulda Had Blue Skies brings Ziemele’s typical blend of vulgarity, innocence, and eroticism into contrast with persistent blue skies, juxtaposing the reality young people were taught to dream of with the reality that has come to fruition. In this collection, imagery from Ovid’s tale of Pygmalion coexist with the iconography of Mickey Mouse and Hello Kitty – icons not of a classical past, but of childhood dreams and a morbidly current 21st century consumerism. In this way, Ziemele progresses from pure cultural criticism and feminist escapism to more sardonic expressions of a pessimistic discontent: in these works, there are fewer mythological heroines, and more unresolve. In this exposition of our cultural happenstance, We Coulda Had Blue Skies offers a pessimistic reflection: ‘the future could have been great,’ Ziemele muses, ‘but we’ve fucked it’.
